To some degree, competition is good and healthy. It helps cultivate important characteristics in an individual; characteristics that are necessary to thrive in our world. On the other hand, when I think of competition, I imagine hamsters running in a wheel of perpetual motion. Running for the sake of the race, failing to go anywhere. I often feel like this has been a metaphor for my own education. What is it all for? The million dollar education, the elite networks, the grades, the internships, the fabulous consulting or finance job? The fact that we think about these questions means that we are entitled to something more, doesn't it?

To the extent that we continue in this rat race of blind ambition (which I imagine I will for some time), competition will slowly, but surely stifle creativity. We will become accustomed to a nice, predictable, comfortable life. We will mistake material success with happiness. We will forget that the purpose of our lives is not to create innovative iPhone apps (note the oxymoron), but to find creative ways to bring people together, to foster unity.

I do concede that the article is decidedly a bit fatalistic, but I think rightly so. It's meant to be a wake-up call, not the final nail in the coffin. It's something to really think about and it's a great starting point for us to have important discussions about what competition actually means...and to what end it is actually useful.

Re: Competition Kills Creativity?

Thanks Taylor! It's clear you re-framed the problem several times, which yields more interesting results. Some of your ideas are incredibly feasible, like sharing laundry duty with a friend. You can animate all the graphics and everything automatically, you can even record voice, though I do my voiceovers on iMovie or Finalcut Pro. The powerpoint method only works on PC, it does not export properly to movie on a Mac. :)

Re: An Animated Brainstorm

You always make the most entertaining videos in our classes! During the quarter, you will realize it's pretty important to have at least one person in your group who manages the energy and the interactions inside your group. I mean, next time you notice some persons are not contributing, I encourage you to gently push and motivate them to participate more.

Re: Brainstorm Session

Loved the last reflection! A good brainstorming is made of details: food, space, etc and - of course - the day and time you run the session. Next time you could try to do a brainstorming session, let's say, friday right before lunch or even having lunch...

Re: Brainstorm Session

Fabulous analysis of what worked and what didn't work so well.
